Is Rock and Roll on Its Last Legs?

By Mark Kassa July 4, 2025

DETROIT — The question looms large: Is rock and roll dead? The genre that once dominated charts and arenas now struggles to find its footing in a music landscape dominated by pop and hip-hop.

A Fading Presence

When was the last time a rock band, not a solo artist, topped the charts? Gone are the days when opening acts like AC/DC, Rush, and Van Halen, who once supported KISS, emerged as headliners. Young bands were once groomed to carry the torch, but the rise of music monopolies— including here in Detroit—has shifted the focus. Corporations now pair two headliners for sold-out shows, sidelining emerging talent.

Rock music barely registers at award ceremonies, overshadowed by more contemporary genres. The airwaves cling to aging bands, many in their 70s or 80s, whose time may soon end.

A Brief Resurgence

A glimmer of hope came with video games like Rock Band and Guitar Hero, which introduced younger audiences to classic rock tracks, extending the genre’s relevance by a decade. Yet, many iconic bands now tour with few or no original members, while cover and tribute acts dominate local venues.

The Underground Struggle

An underground scene of talented, unknown rock bands persists, but breaking through seems unlikely. The era of garage bands—friends jamming, improving, and forming a cohesive unit—may be fading. Social media influencers showcase polished guitar solos and edited performances, but these often fail to translate to live settings.

A Bleak Outlook?

Is rock and roll truly dead? The future looks grim, yet a single breakout band could reignite the flame. For now, the genre’s legacy lies scattered, waiting for a revival that may never come.
